The Thonet S3001 chair from the 1990's, is a true design classic. From the mind of Christoph Zschocke, an architectural, industrial and product design expert, who worked towards the end of the 20th century on various projects for furniture pioneer Thonet.
Established in 1819, this French firm produced many timeless designs by houshold names such as Marcel Breuer, Mart Stam, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Le Corbusier. The Bauhaus influence and Thonet's expert craftsmanship can be clearly seen in the S3001.
A reimagination of the classic club chair, its elegant design features an outer frame of slim tubular steel with a chromed finish. A large bentwood panel of beech surrounds the back and sides of the chair. Sumptuous leather, coloured in dark navy, is used for the upholstery.
Due to its extremely high price point (many thousands of pounds), Thonet's S3001 chairs were only made in a short production run. Hence, it is extremely unusual to see more than a twin set available for sale. We have a group of six chairs available, ideal for a project.
At the time of sale customers could chose from several colour and leather combinations. The stylish combination of navy leather and beech wood is in our opinion one of the best.
The six chairs belong to the same set, they all match and are totally original. Having been kept by the former owner in excellent condition with few signs of wear (consistent with usage and age). Of solid construction with a reassuringly heavy weight. The leather upholstery, professionally cleaned and fed, is extremely comfortable with its soft and luxurious feel. The plywood panel is beautifully refinished, time has helped for the surface to develop into fine colour. One chair has a small raised/discoloured line of approximately 8cm showing on the beech back panel.
Thonet's S3001 chair will slot into many interiors with great ease. The clever design by Christoph Zschocke looks good from all angles, front, back and sides. Suitable for a home or business environment this group of collectable chairs will provide the ultimately talking point!
