6.5" Bust Of Michelangelo's David Alabaster & Resin Sculpture Gino Ruggeri Italy VINTAGE
Every year millions of visitors visit the Galleria dell'Accademia in Florence, Italy to marvel at Michelangelo's stunning Renaissance statue of the biblical hero David. Created between 1501 and 1504 from a single piece of marble this masterpiece stands 14 feet tall. Michelangleo was just 26 years old when he accepted the commission and his interpretation of David was totally unexpected. Usual depictions often showed him victorious and triumphant after slaying the giant Goliath.
Michelangelo chose instead to portray David before his battle and victory. His sculpture shows David with a tense looking face and showing him in a moment of full concentration. The statue holds a classical pose, the figure rests all his body weight on the right leg. The left leg stands a little further forward. This standing position has moved the whole torso into a slight s-shape, with hips and shoulders positioned at opposite angles.
The lovely bust of Michelangelo's David that we have currently available to purchase captures these details beautifully. Although only the head and neck were sculpted for this vintage work of art by the Italian artist Gino Ruggeri, it shows David's facial expression and the curvature of the body starting at the top of the neck so well. One part of the original statue that cannot be viewed so easily is the top of David's head and his amazing curly hair. For this reason alone it will be worth investing in this lovely piece as this is an element that is often overlooked and rarely mentioned.
This piece, made of alabaster mixed with a resin, is in excellent condition with no damage. Most likely the subject was sculpted from clay after which a mould was produced. Made in Italy, signed by the artist. Fitted on a plinth made of black veined marble. The gallery sticker with the artist's name just about visible underneath. Ready for immediate display as a modern Grand Tour souvenir.
