A Twin Set Of Large Derby Porcelain Candlestick Figurines c. 1775 ANTIQUE
A fine pair of figural candlesticks by the Derby Porcelain factory. Of large proportion, standing 27cm tall, and dating circa 1775. Depicting a male and female adult figure, each standing in front of a bocage background and leaning toward their sconce. Likely to be Georgian flower sellers with the female carrying an array of flowers in her apron. The male stands besides a large flower basket and holds a small arrangement in his right hand. Both characters are standing on a scrolled base in the Rococo taste.
The workmanship is simply exceptional; finely modelled and hand painted figurines of good proportion and stance. The bocages feature finely detailed flowers and leaves, all individually hand painted. This Georgian couple is beautifully dressed, their clothing having many fine details of the period and attractive floral designs. Two elegant candle sconces complete the presentation.
Both candlesticks are in remarkable condition, considering that these fragile pieces were made during the reign of George the Third (1738-1820). Features most of the original glaze and hand painted decoration. The glazing has worn off in a few places (her and his neck, back of her bodice and his hat). Some small areas needed restoration during its life course. Several flower petals and a few flower heads (part of his left hand) have vanished over the years. One of the sconces appears to have been re-attached. Several thin firing lines are visible on this piece but most of the original gilding is still in place. The underside of the bases feature vent holes that would have relieved the pressure during the firing process in the kiln.
A fine survivor; designed by the Derby Porcelain Factory to adorn the dessert table in Georgian homes with a cultivated taste. Collectable pieces.
