Arts & Crafts Panelled Blanket Chest Gothic Revival Pokerwork ANTIQUE

A spectacular Arts & Crafts blanket chest with Gothic Revival pokerwork panels. Features an abundance of ornate and decorative elements that were transfered into the wood by a gifted pokerwork artist. The lid is fitted with its original hand forged hinges, on the top is attractive knotwork decoration reminiscent of the medieval period. No less than five large panels display striking imagery, such as winged dragons and putti, that are associated with the Gothic Revival period. Quality construction from pine, dating from the end of the 19th century. Measures approx. 4 x 2 x 2 Ft.

Pokerwork became a popular craft during Victorian times. Also known as pyrography (= writing with fire), is the free-handed art of using a heated object like a poker to burn forms into wood, leather or other materials. Likely because of the large amounts of time and work involved, this art form is mainly seen on smaller pieces such as wooden boxes and small furniture. It is less common to find pokerwork on larger pieces like wardrobes or blanket chests.

The centre panel of the chest is dominated by a large urn with swirls and acanthus leaves and a grotesque mask. This centre image is flanked on each side by a panel showing a large winged dragon. Both end panels of the chest feature a putto figure dressed in a flowing robe surrounded by twisting vines with grape clusters.

We found this fine antique blanket chest, although structurally sound, in a sad condition. Its knotwork decoration was barely visible and needed extensive cleaning, colouring and some re-carving. More repairs were needed on a few of the set-in panels and the legs.

The blanket chest has been worked on by one of the best furniture experts in the UK who has now carried out a careful restoration. All character has been retained hence the marks of a long working life are still visible. Its interior and exterior have received a deep clean. The back is left undressed as blanket chests are usually placed against the foot end of a double bed. The front, sides and lid have received a professional polish. The lock is in working condition and an authentic key is supplied.

This most interesting piece with links to the Gothic Revival period and Arts & Crafts Movement is highly decorative, and now ready to be enjoyed again by its new owner.
