Cadbury's Chocolates Shop Counter Display Cabinet Edwardian (1901-1910) ANTIQUE

John Cadbury (1801-1889) founded his business in 1824 in Birmingham, England. Initially known for selling tea, coffee and drinking chocolate, this enterprising firm introduced their first chocolate bar in 1847. The first chocolate eggs were manufactured by 1875, with a choice of 19 varieties of Easter eggs by 1893.

Cadbury's world famous Dairy Milk bar in its distinct purple wrapper was first introduced to chocolate lovers in 1905. This beautiful glass display cabinet dates from around this time. Designed to stand in a eye-catching position on the Edwardian shop counter it will have been filled with the popular products from the Cadbury's factory.

To reflect their fine status, Cadbury's cocoa based products were presented to customers in a high quality cabinet marked with company branding. The beech and oak case is constructed with a high level of workmanship. A classic stepped design is used for the top and base. Two elegant looking wooden beads were used to form the slim front corners of the unit. The front and side panels of glass are decorated with the well known Cadbury's Chocolates logo. Two clear display shelves (likely replaced) are held by eight brass support brackets. The top and base of the cabinet interior are covered with milk glass. The display area can be accessed by opening one of the two sliding glass doors. Four small feet are fitted to the bottom to avoid damage.

We came across this beautiful Cadbury's display cabinet in 'barn find' condition. The original features such as the 'Cadbury's Chocolates' stencilled branding on period glass panes, undamaged milk glass and authentic brass shelf brackets as well as the compact size make this is a unique piece. The larger version is more commonly seen but might not be a practical size for all homes. Our professional restorer carried out a thorough clean but was very careful to retain the charm and character of the piece. The wood has been waxed and polished. Our furniture expert remarked that the cabinet is now fit for use in the retail premises of an upmarket chocolatier!
