Compact Writing Table & Desk Walnut/Leather Victorian (1860-1880) ANTIQUE

This writing table of an unusually compact size was made by craftsmen during the Victorian period, more than likely between 1860 to 1880. The cabinet makers used high quality mahogany hardwood.

The top is covered by a hand coloured leather work surface with lots of character. We commissioned our furniture expert to replace the old and damaged top as it was not original to the table. The amazing burgundy red colour compliments the warm tones & colours of the woodwork.

The desk is fitted with a drawer that provides ample space for plenty of writing accessories, such as paper, notebook and pens. But the space could also be purposed for hiding equipment such as a laptop or iPad. The drawer front is decorated with cockbeading and beautiful hand turned knobs.

More period detailing is provided by the four scrolled brackets and hand turned and fluted wooden legs with brass castor feet.

This is not just a beautiful piece of furniture, it is also extremely practical. Many antique desks are large and cumbersome. This version is just over 2.5 feet in length and only 1.5 feet in width. It can be put to use in so many types of properties, large and small. It would make a wonderful desk that could be placed under a staircase or on a landing. But it could also be the right size for use in a lounge or dining room.

The period cup castors provide easy movement if necessary. The back of the unit is fitted with a fake (also called dummy) drawer front. This will give the new owner another option as the unit can, instead of being placed against a wall, also be used as a freestanding piece. These are the kind of details that we look for when we choose new furniture stock. It allows our customers to continue to use their antique furniture pieces even when they move on to a new home or interior.

We found this piece of furniture in a good condition, with just a few marks of wear, yet we decided that it deserved a full restoration by an expert. The wood received a deep clean and has been polished.  All our furniture is well cared for and where necessary we do make considered repairs and/or improvements, always in keeping with the original piece. This lovely desk is clean and ready to be used.
