Most of us will bring back a souvenir or two from our holidays. This was not any different for young men of means that travelled in the 17th, 18th and 19th century to experience European classical culture. Only reserved for the priveledged few, this phenomenon was aptly called 'The Grand Tour'.
Intaglios become a popular momento or souvenir during the 1800's and were widely collected. Made of plaster with impressions of Grand Tour subjects. Many featured famous portraits, renowned architecture as well as scenes from ancient Rome and Greek mythology.
We love these amazing reminders of times long passed. Framing is one of the best way to show off a collection of Grand Tour intaglios. This group of nine plaster impressions (individually measuring between 5 and 2cm across, approx.) are fitted on a striking green background and displayed in an ebonised wooden frame.
