Engraving Arimaspi & Griffins Plate 61 William Hamilton 1787 ANTIQUE

Original engraving from the rare and valuable book series Antiquites Etrusques, Grecques et Romaine by Pierre Francois Hugues d'Hancarville. Illustrated by F.A. David and published in Paris from 1785-88. It depicts a one-eyed Arimaspi in battle with two Griffins and the heart of Lachus.

This collectable hand coloured image was printed on a page size of approximately 258mm x 185mm. Part of volume IV, this second edition was a less extravagant and expensive edition compared to the original release in folio size. The original title was Antiquités Etrusques, Grecques et Romaines, tirées du Cabinet du M. Hamilton which was published in Naples from 1766-67.

This groundbreaking publication illustrated and described the first ancient vase collection of Sir William Hamilton which was sold to the British Museum in 1772. The books provided an invaluable record of the design and artwork found on ancient Greek, Roman and Etruscan vases.

This original print is in good condition with a few small (age related?) marks. A custom made mount was commissioned and the image has been professionally framed. A beautiful piece of wall art, ready for display.
