F. Maund & E. Berg Glass & Oak Shop Display Case 1910 ANTIQUE

This is a great example of the high quality workmanship and design expertise of London based firm F. Maund & E. Berg. Specialists in shop fittings they manufactured this large display cabinet at the turn of the 20th Century, around 1910.

Fine oak has been used for this extremely sturdy shop cabinet. Its slim looking design has allowed the use of large pieces of glass. Made with the aim of bringing as much light into the cabinet as possible to show off the merchandise, both sides and the top panel are glazed. The interior shelves are all made of glass, hence the light can travel evenly throughout the case from top to bottom.

The front of the cabinet is fitted with a large glazed door on brass hinges. Access to the display space is gained by operating a stylish brass turn handle. As mentioned the show case is fitted with glass shelves, and all four of them rest on their original brass supports with each level evenly spaced around 7 inches.

The cabinet is fitted with the original back panel made out of stained and fused wooden strips. The bottom section of the inside space is covered with wood close in colour to the back. A small off-white plaque with the makers name and address is nailed on too.

We prefer the original shop look of this retail display cabinet. The new owner can decide on possibly adding a mirror plate or a coloured baize to the back of this unit. If necessary the shelf brackets can be unscrewed and fixed onto different heights. Individual shelves can be removed completely if needed.

This is an extremely useful piece with ample display space which can still be used for its original purpose of showcasing merchandise. Apart from the use in a retail environment it could also be used in a home or office. It would look amazing standing on top of a kitchen worktop, resting against a side wall. It could house a collection or display a number of decorative items, the list is almost endless.

Although designed for standing on top of another unit, it could be placed directly onto a floor surface as the base is beautifully finished with a mitred skirt moulding. Because of the large amount of glass and weight involved we recommend attaching the cabinet to a sturdy wall.

We found this antique shop fitting in great condition. The original look and patina have been carefully retained to keep the warm character of this lovely piece. The case has been thoroughly cleaned, inside and out. There are a few age and use related marks and scratches on the wood as well as the glass. High quality natural wax has been applied to bring out the grain of the oak and a light polish completes the look. This stylish antique retail glass cabinet from Edwardian times is now ready for its next custodian.
