Fireside Companion Beefeater Cast Iron Stand English c. 1910 ANTIQUE
A wonderful Edwardian Beefeater fireside companion complete with (sword) fire poker. Presented as the Chief Yeoman Warder from the Tower of London. Dressed in red Tudor design ceremonial dress adorned with the cypher of King George V (reign 1910 - 1936). His White Tower mace is fitted with a storage compartment for the poker. The reverse side is hollow and has space for more fireplace tools. This presentation is 3.5 inches short of three feet in height, heavy in weight, perfectly balanced. Made of cast iron with original hand painted decoration.
The Chief Yeoman Warder is the highest ranking position of the Yeoman body that is tasked with guarding the Tower of London. For ceremonial duties Beefeaters wear their iconic red and gold dress uniforms, a design thought to date from 1550. The Chief Yeoman Warder carries his mace of office to show his Royal authority. On top of this ceremonial staff is a silver model of the White Tower, the oldest and most famous building within the Tower of London.
This fireplace companion is a highly decorative yet an extremely functional piece. The Beefeater figure is of excellent form with fine detailing. A few examples of this are the white neck collar (known as the Elizabethan ruff), the Royal cypher, medals and rosettes.
Standing on a weighted plinth, this is a heavy object. Supplied with the original sword-shaped poker that is stored inside the mace of the Yeoman Warder. The sword handle is visible above the model of the White Tower fitted on the top of the staff.
The back of this antique fireside companion has an open recess. Two hooks are fitted within this space to hang more tools for the fireplace if needed. Originally a brush and dustpan could have been part of the set, but we will leave this decision to the new custodian.
In excellent condition, can be used immediately. This item has been been carefully cleaned to preserve all its character yet reveal the true colours of the original painted decoration. We felt that the small areas of paint loss should be kept unrestored. This wear is commensurate with the age of the antique.
A fine piece of English craftsmanship, rarely available.
