Framed Etching Partridge Shooting Henry Alken 47.5 x 42.5cm ANTIQUE
This fine hand coloured etching depicts an early 19th century partridge shoot. The antique print shows a rural landscape with gentlemen dressed in the attire of their day. Wearing waistcoats and top hats, carrying shotguns and accompanied by their dogs.
Henry Alken was a painter well known for his sporting scenes and much of his work was etched by I. Clark. Published in 1820 by prominent London publisher Thomas McLean.
During the early 1800's this rural country pursuit was the preserve of land owners and a few invited guests. It would be a casual walk through the fields and using their dogs, usually setters and pointers, to flush out the partridges from the hedges. Towards the end of the 19th century this rural pass time had transitioned into large (often commercial) shooting events popularised by the landed gentry and royalty.
This two hundred year old etching is in excellent condition with a few marks of foxing. Professionally mounted with washing line decoration and presented in a fine burr wood frame. A sought after piece, ready to hang on your wall.
