Framed Etching Shooter & Spaniels 50 x 43cm Early 19th Century ANTIQUE
A wonderful hand coloured etching dating from the first part of the 1800's. A traditional game bird shooting scene that features most likely a land owner in early 19th century dress and his dogs (spaniels). In the sky, above a marshland landscape complete with bulrushes, is the faint silhouette of a bird, most likely a snipe.
This small wading bird flies in a erratic zigzagging pattern. British soldiers in the 1770's that hunted the snipe soon realised that only a master markman could consistently hit this fast moving target. This coined and popularised the military term 'sniper'.
We are not completely sure who the original artist, etcher or publisher of this print was. The skilled illustrator could well have looked for inspiration to the work of artists like George Morland (1763 - 1804) or Samuel Howitt (1756 - 1822).
An original etching that is over two hundred years old and in excellent condition with a few marks of foxing. A professional presentation that was completed some years ago now, it has been carefully cleaned and refreshed in our framing workshop. Presented in a custom mount with hand applied wash line decorations and fitted in a high quality wooden frame. Ready to hang on your wall.
