Grand Tour Watercolour The Temples At Paestum 19th Century ANTIQUE

An attractive, colourful Grand Tour watercolour painting of the Greek temple ruins at Paestum, Italy. The scene shows a group of visitors at the ancient Doric temples of Hera I and Hera II. The painting is English in origin and dates from around the 2nd half of the 19th century.

Paestum was an ancient Greek city situated in what is now Southern Italy. Established around 600 BCE, it was known as Poseidonia, later re-named as Paestum when the region was conquered by the Romans. Its famous three temples are the best surviving examples of Doric architecture in the world. For a young noblemen on their Grand Tour Paestum was a popular destination. Sir John Soames visited the area in the late 1770's.

This watercolour painting is in excellent condition. Professionally presented with a new custom made mount and wooden frame. Sealed against dust and protected by 3mm clear acrylic glazing that protects against UV rays. Ready to be displayed.

A beautiful piece of art, for interiors old and new.
