Mahogany Silver Table Chinese Chippendale Style 1900's ANTIQUE

An exquisite antique silver table with a look that is rooted in one of Thomas Chippendale's Chinese furniture designs. Symmetry, balance and proportion were key elements of style in the Georgian period and can be spotted with ease. Despite Chippendale compiling his first design book as far back as 1754, furniture makers have returned to his elegant and intricate style ideas time and time again over the last 250 years or so. This table was made around the turn of the 20th century around the start of the Edwardian period (1901-1910).

The silver table, a country house staple, would commonly be used in a dining or drawing room for holding silverware and cutlery before a dining or tea service. Designed to be placed centrally the table was finished on all four sides. The table top is surrounded by a gallery or raised rim to prevent items sliding off. Also called a tea table or side table it is a practical piece of furniture for all homes.

An exceptional silver or tea table of unusual form with its mitred corners and elegant two column legs. Its geometric design features intricate fretwork in the Oriental taste. The edges of the beautifully finished table top are surrounded by a delicately pierced gallery. The wide frieze is adorned with a carved centre of scrolling leaves. Curved brackets with more ornate fretwork connect the top section of the table to the legs. More wood carving of leafy scrolls crowned by a shell pattern can be found at the bottom of each table leg. The shaped X stretcher completes this striking piece of furniture.

This antique silver table is in exceptional condition. It was found by us in a relatively good condition, however the fretwork had several damaged, loose and missing pieces. The stretcher was damaged and the table surface showed dented areas, the signs of use over the years. Some antique dealers might have kept this piece in its original condition. We felt that this show piece with so much intricate detailing and skilled workmanship should be put back to the best possible condition. Hence this table has received a full restoration by one of the best restorers in this country.
