Moulded Glass Inkwell On Ceramic & Copper Dish English 19th Century ANTIQUE
This beautiful English inkwell was made around 1870. The maker of this appealing piece used wrythen moulded glass to great effect. The main body of the bottle is decorated with a elegant pattern of curved lines. Fitted with a brass hinged glass lid that shows off the same curved design leading to a top with a cut glass star that catches the light. This attractive inkwell of smaller proportions was made by a highly skilled Victorian glass blower.
But there is more to say about this extraordinary object. The ink bottle is fixed directly onto a lovely ceramic dish. This somewhat unusual, but not a completely uncommon design, might well have been made with a person in mind that was prone to knocking his or her's inkwell over. Secondly, it is also practical as the dish can provide a space for resting one's writing implement.
The dish is beautifully decorated with a transfer print of a colourful flower arrangement on an off-white background. The underside of the stand is covered with a copper that is curved gently over the edging of the dish. Its metal surface has taken on an attractive colour making this inkwell rather desirable. The conditon is amazing, this inkwell is without any kind of damage. It would make a lovely present for the inkwell, ceramic or (wrythen) glass collector. But as this antique is still so useable today. It would be an amazing gift for someone to store their favourite writing ink in, and to refill their fountain pen.
