Oak Wall Cabinet Art Nouveau & Art Deco Dutch 1920's ANTIQUE
A Dutch Art Deco wall cabinet constructed from sturdy oak and dating from the 1920's. Behind the bevelled mirror door is a storage space with shelf. Underneath is a small drawer for smaller items. Fitted with two handles of turned wood. The front is finely decorated with two tulip motifs, hand carved in the Art Nouveau (or Arts & Crafts) style. The Art Deco period followed soon after, which explains the striking banded inlay with its geometric forms. The lower section is fitted with three small brass hooks. Stepped side brackets and a scalloped bottom edging complete the design.
This type of Dutch hanging cupboard is traditionally found in a bathroom. Usually named a 'medicijn kastje' (translated medicines cabinet) the household would use it to store their common remedies for coughs and colds as well as first aid supplies.
This lovely antique piece with elements from the Dutch Art Nouveau and Art Deco period is in great condition. With the usual marks of age, wear, some ring marks and foxing on the mirror plate. At some point during its lifetime the oak lost its original finish. However this does not detract as the wood is full of character, something that will no doubt appeal to many. The cabinet has been thoroughly but also carefully cleaned, polished and waxed. Two sturdy metal brackets are fitted to the back for wall hanging.
Ready for your home.
