Pair Of Art Deco Bookends Metal Elephant On Marble Base 1930's
Elephants have been and always will be a popular subject for the home decoration market. During the 1920's and 1930's elephant figurines of all shapes and sizes were introduced, particularly in France, for use in luxurious Art Deco interiors. The time become well known for the use of materials such as glass, chrome, bakelite, exquisite wood veneers and marble. Key design elements of Art Deco were objects with beautiful geometric and curvilinear shapes.
This lovely pair of elephant bookends demonstrates these principles well. Most likely designed and cast in France, the Art Deco curves of both elephants are so attractive to look at. Luxurious marble is used to give the metal figurines more weight. Fabric is attached to the bottom to avoid damage to any surface.
The condition of both stands is fair, but there are a number of small marks on the metal surface and base. Unfortunately one of the elephants is wounded. We decided against a repair for two reasons, first it tells a story and secondly the damage can be hidden completely from view. Naturally this issue is reflected in the price, it gives a great opportunity to obtain two elephants for the price of one, a real bargain.
