Pier Gilded Mirror With Foxed Distressed Mercury Glass Regency (1811-1820) 80 x 47cm ANTIQUE

This gilded pier mirror was made during the Regency period. The neo-classical design with its straight columns and ornate decoration was a common feature already seen in many Georgian homes. This type of mirror was usually placed on a pier, i.e. a wall between two windows, with the sole purpose of reflecting the light and creating an illusion of space. The tall and narrow mirror design was often used in pairs. They can still be seen fitted at either side of a large window in many country and stately homes. They were also designed to be placed above a fireplace.

The worn condition of the gilded wooden frame compliments the amazing look of the original mirror glass. Bevelled on three sides, top, bottom and right hand side. We have never seen a distressed (or as we say in the antiques trade 'foxed') mirror plate like it. Often areas of distressed mirror glass can look quite rough and ready, if you know what we mean. But this antique mirror has such an even distribution of distress right across the surface but still shows a soft reflection as can be seen in a few of the stock images. It is simply beautiful, and we could not stop looking at it for days. It is something that is totally unique to this mirror plate, there is no other the same.

In unrestored country house condition. The frame is well worn with patches of exposed gesso and some areas of touched up gilt. Together with the distressed glass plate it looks absolutely stunning and that is what this mirror is all about....
