Sterling Silver Sugar Sifter Spoon George Adams London 1862 ANTIQUE
A lovely looking sugar sifter made in London in 1862 by silversmith George Adams (1808-1895). The business was established by William Chawner in 1815 and his wife Mary continued trading after his death in 1834. Some years laters Mary's daughter Mary Ann married silversmith George William Adams. Together with his mother-in-law he started a partnership in 1840 to continue the Chawner family business. Now named Chawner & Co their firm became one of the most important spoon makers of the mid 19th century.
This sugar sifter ladle is made with a heavier gauge silver which is needed for its decorative King's pattern. This design was created in the 1830's and has been in use ever since. Both sides of the handle carry a shell and honeysuckle decoration. The flower and foliage theme continues inside the bowl of the ladle with an intricate pierced design. The reverse of the bowl is also decorated with a shell design, also called a diamond heel.
Made of sterling silver with visible hall marks that show the manufacturer's initials 'GA', lion passant mark, London town mark, and year mark 'g'. A lovely detail is the confirmation that the tax was paid for the American War of Independence as the spoon handle is also stamped with the temporary duty mark of the monarch's head.
The condition of the silver sifter ladle/spoon, including the decoration and piercing is excellent.
