Suffolke Described - Suffolk County Map By John Speed - George Humble Edition 1611 ANTIQUE

Some of the popular and most sought-after country maps of all time were made by John Speed (1552-1629), one of England's best known cartographers. He made use of the most up-to-date sources and information available to him to produce an accurate record of the local towns, villages, rivers and county boundaries. A new feature for his time was the inclusion of principal town plans on most of the maps, and also the coats of arms of local landowners and nobility were added.

This is the first edition Suffolk country map from 1611, published by George Humble.  Originally from the John Speed's atlas 'The Theatre of the Empire of Great Britaine' which contained a full set of individual county maps covering England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland. Most of the engraving was done in Amsterdam in the workshop of engraver Jodocus Hondicus. The maps were printed by Wiliam Hall and John Beale. The maps were presented in a two folio spread with a fold down the middle, with printed text (town and villages names etc) on the reverse. This map is hand coloured, a feature often associated with antique maps, often done at a later date.

A highly collectable original map that has been cleaned with the utmost care and professionally re-mounted with high quality acid-free board. It is now safely fitted to its new mount and behind 3mm clear acrylic glazing that protects against UV rays. The map is sealed from dust, and a bespoke black wooden frame completes the presentation.

The condition of the print is good, and consistent with its age. The clear margins outside of the decorative border were lost at the time to make the print fit into its old standard frame. The new mount is covering the said border slightly. This beautiful and super decorative map is framed in a fresh modern way and will be an amazing addition to any interior.
