Toleware Tea Canister Faux Wood Hand Painted 19th Century ANTIQUE

Late Victorian toleware storage canister most likely used for keeping tea in. Unique hand painted decoration of faux wood and lined with red coloured bands. Supplied with the original lid.

Storage containers made of thin metal sheet, also called toleware, were a common sight in Victorian shops that sold commodities like tea. The various blends were kept in individual tins that were on display on shelves behind the shop counter.

This unique looking toleware canister that we have currently available was likely used for keeping tea leaves fresh. Still looking magnificent with its original faux wood decoration. Only a skilled artist can achieve this amazing knotted wood surface that looks so convincing. The red bands that run around the tin provide a striking contrast. Even more hand painted detailing like the lovely star motif, can be found on the top of the lid.

This antique tea canister is in excellent condition with a well fitting lid. As expected with an item like this being in daily use, there is wear and tear. The used look and appearance of the container is for us the most attractive feature.
